SOAL UTBK BAHASA INGGRIS

Text 1

Changing lifestyles, changes in diet, reduced physical exercise, as well as increased human life expectancy, have accidentally increased the prevalence of non-contagious diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is chronic disease caused by inherited and or acquired deficiency in the production of insulin hormone by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced. This deficiency results in increased concentration of glucose in the blood, which can develop into other serious complications like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, circulation problem, nerve damage and damage to the kidneys or eyes. The main symptoms of untreated diabetes are increased thirst, overactive bladder, especially during the night, extreme tiredness, weight-loss, genital itching or regular episodes of thrush and blurred vision.

There are two main types of diabetes mellitus. Insulin-dependent diabetes, known as type-1 diabetes, develops when the insulin –producing cells in the pancreas have been destroyed. This type of diabetes generally affects younger people. Type-2 diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, develops when the body develops insufficient insulin or when the produced insulin does not work properly, also known as insulin resistance.

People at risk of developing type-2 diabetes are those with family history of diabetes, people aged between 40 years and 75 years old, those of Asian or Afro-Caribbean origin, people who are very overweight and women  who have given birth to a large baby. Certain medications, hormones, and steroid can also increase person’s risk of acquiring diabetes mellitus.

People with type-1 diabetes need injections of insulin for the rest of their lives. They are also need to have a healthy diet containing the right balance of the foods. Insulin can not be taken orally because it is destroyed by the digestive juice. People with type-1 diabetes usually take their two injections or four injections of insulin per day. People with type-2 diabetes need to eat a healthy diet, and sometimes take additional oral hypoglycemia tablets. These tablets can help the pancreas produce more insulin, assist the body to make better use of the insulin that the pancreas does produce, or slow down the speed at which the body absorbs glucose from the intestine.

There is currently no care for diabetes, but with correct treatment, the blood glucose level can be controlled, to give the patient a relatively normal lifestyle. Eating healthily and taking regular physical exercise would also reduce the risk of developing complications.

Text 1

One of the most mysterious things in nature is the ability of certain creatures to find their way home, sometimes from great distance. Birds are not the only ones who can do this. Bees, eels, and salmon are able to return to a particular place after doing journeys, too.

Most migrations take place between breeding grounds and regions where animals feed. For some animals, such as the lemming, the movement is a one -way trip. Scientists call this movement emigration, because these animals never return to their homes. For other animals such as birds, the migration includes a return trip home. Birds move in periodic migration, or at regular times during their lives, and often to the same place year after year.

Many experiments have been made with birds in an attempt to find out what guides them on their way home. In one case, seven swallows were taken 400 miles from home. When they were set free, five of them returned to their nests. In another case, a certain kind of sea bird was taken from its nests on the Welsh coasts to Venice by plane. When it was released, it made its way home to its nests, a distance of 930 miles if it flew in straight line.

Migrating birds offer an even more amazing example of this ability. There are swifts and house martins that migrate from England to South Africa every year. They not only return to England the next spring, but many of them come back to nests in the very same house they nested the year before. They fly the incredible distance of 6,000 miles, one way.

Certain types of butterfly migrate, too and find their way home over long distances. In the tropics one can sometimes see the great mass flights of butterflies all flying steadily in one direction. They may go a thousand miles and more and then return again in another season.

Despite all the efforts that have been made to explain how these creatures find their way home, we still have no sure explanation. Since many of the birds fly over great bodies of water, we can not explain it by saying they use landmarks to guide them. Just to say they have an 'instinct' does not really explain the rights condition. The reason they do it may to obtain for good or to reproduce under the right conditions. But the signals and guideposts they use on their flights are still a mystery to man.

The modern world faces many major problems to which there are no easy solutions. There included unemployment, health, over-population and course the environment really the most important?

If people are unemployed, they are unable to earn money and it is a fact of life without an income it is difficult to live. Of course, work provides more than financial support; it gives people self-esteem and pride.

Unfortunately, technological developments and other factors mean that the job market is shrinking world-wide and young people have reduced prospects for work. Although this is certainly a major threat to people’s well-being, it needs to be addressed by individual governments rather than globally.

Healthy is clearly an important concern that affects both individuals and the planet as a whole. Even though many illnesses have been eradicated, others remain a threat, and the overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of resistant strain of bacteria. Nevertheless, on the whole, general health is improving, and in the developing countries medical aid programs are already working towards creating a healthier population.

Over population has implication for all of us, and improved general health means that people are living longer. However, as with health, there are already programs in place implementing measures to deal with not only a rising population, but also an ageing population.

So what about the environment? There are urgent issues that need to be faced, including global warming, pollution and the loss of species. Unlike the other issue discussed, there is no clear global move that can be seen to deal with these problems. Also, unlike the other issues, changes in the environment have a direct impact on the whole planet. Climate change and destruction of ecosystem could endanger all life on the planet if not dealt with quickly and at an international level.

In conclusion, other problems primarily affect only the quality of life, whereas environmental issues affect the actual existence of life itself. It is clear, therefore, that protecting the environment is the most important problem facing the world today.

There are two types of monochromatic or black-and-white photos. One type is a gray-scale photograph, which is truly black and white. In a gray-scale photo, all you see is black, white, and shades of gray. Gray-scale photos tend to have a stark, cold look to them. The other type is sepia. Sepia photographs use shades of brown in place of shades of gray. Photographers started using the sepia process to give their photos warmer tones.

Some people think that sepia photographers are just gray-scale photo that have “aged”, that have changed color over the years, but this isn’t true.
